San Simón (Afro Latin Soul)

$10 Cover (100% to the artist)

Seven piece combo playing soul with an Afro-Caribbean pulse drawing from older and more recent sounds

San Simón’s music is best described as soul with a Caribbean pulse. A world music group based in the NYC area, San Simón is fueled by the backgrounds of its players, who come from the Spanish-speaking Caribbean.

The group is led by guitarist/director/composer Evan Ubiera, who pens the original songs and arrangements for this small ‘combito’ of choice talents from the area. Evan Ubiera carefully considers the intersection of various musical worlds from soul to Latin, DR and PR villages, Philly to Jersey, and back to NYC to map out San Simón’s music. The limitations and virtues of this fun and exciting lineup make for an honest and unique experience. It’s a family of smiles and good vibes honoring those who came before by using it as a platform for something all their own.

San Simon has performed at local NJ/NYC venues such as Groove Bar, Camaradas, The Shrine, Silvana, C’mon Everybody, Fox and Crow, and Union City’s Cultural Center. Notable festivals and events: Music in The Park, Lincoln Park, Jersey City, NJ; Reddit’s Hispanic Heritage Month, Manhattan, NY; Amplify Latinx’ Hispanic Heritage Month, Boston, MA; Bodega Jams, East Brooklyn, NY. San Simón released an EP titled “Talk To Me” in 2017, followed by their 2019 single release of “Golden Lady,” a merengue cover of the classic Stevie Wonder song.

Their music has been featured on NPR’s Morning Becomes Electric in Southern California and on Discolai’s Dominican music blog for the release of their 2021 comment on police brutality, “Hey!”. They have also been included in numerous online playlists around the world.

Currently, San Simón is brewing a new sonic concoction, promising a deeper exploration of their diverse influences. Stay tuned, and visit San Simón’s social channels to stay updated on tastes of what’s to come!

Free Whenever

$10 cover at the Door

Free Whenever’s music sits somewhere in between form (saguna) and formlessness (nirguna).

The band’s guiding philosophy and approach to making music is rooted in the ancient practice of long-form improvisation. The result is a unique blend of vintage psychedelia, dub reggae, eastern modality, and African rhythmic tradition that leaves listeners high — fully immersed in a synesthetic sound experience.

Founding members Neil Guleria and Trevor LaVecchia started recording out of their Brooklyn apartment in 2020, covering a range of styles from trip-hop electronica to desert psych rock. As the project took form and its true identity revealed itself, LaVecchia brought his affinity for chordal movement and song structures to the bass while Guleria complimented with melodic and atmospheric layers. Free Whenever’s self-proclaimed “psychedelic groove music” identity is built on their intertwining, conversational bass and guitar melodies over a backbone of Afro-Latin percussion and punchy, hip hop-inspired drums.

Widely Grown 1st Thursday Residence

$10 Cover

Widely Grown, the dynamic Americana and country coterie from Jersey City, New Jersey, is set to release their 2nd single on 4/20. Appropriate. "It's just a fun song. The goal with this record was to not be so serious." This five-piece outfit is known for weaving together a set from delicate folk to energetic high-octane country-bluegrass-rock n' roll. Each member brings their unique background and influence into the music, resulting in a sound that is familiar in all the good ways presented in such a way that distinguishes it from anything you've heard before.

Band founder and songwriter, James Calleo decided to pick up where last year's single, Pickles left off, in writing the next batch of songs meant to counter taking life too seriously. Their upcoming EP, While the Night is Young, will be released via streaming singles throughout 2024, which kicked off with Mississippi Anna, their first release in over a year.

High is different though. It features MD native Crosby Cofod on the slide guitar.
"We recorded the tune with fiddle as usual but the energy was calling for something bigger," James said. High kicks into to gear right from the getco.

Fans of Americana, country, and rock n' roll will want to take advantage of this opportunity to see Widely Grown live. Widely Grown's live show is sure to get your toes tapping and your heart racing.

It’s not that they have no sound: blues, rock, alternative, R&B, country, funk and nu-metal all become ingredients for Forget the Whale’s veritable witches’ brew. “Forget the Whale is the band to see,” was one auspicious comment that emerged from their debut showcase at Rolf’s Restaurant and Pub (Warren, NJ) in August of 2014. Nick Dunbar and Sad Cowby

$10 Cover

Born in California, and spending the last 15 years in Colorado, Nick Dunbar is no stranger to the wild west and the culture that comes with it. Nick’s captivating debut solo album “Little Country” was released in early 2022, and is stacked with some of Colorado’s finest musicians. On the record he creatively intertwines the classic Western swing and Honky Tonk sounds of greats like Lefty Frizzell, Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb, with the country western traditions of Merl Haggard and Willie Nelson. His songwriting is playful and humorous but also honest and cathartic .

After playing mandolin in touring bands and pounding the pavement playing Honky Tonks and Dive bars all over the country, Nick decided to slow down to build a life and family with his wife. He began farming, raising livestock and growing vegetable and flower gardens. With three kids and a farm full of chores and animals, he is finding some solace in this more sustainable lifestyle. But Nick continues to write and perform as often as he can. His shows are filled with hot licks and witty banter, and no two shows are alike. He is very entertaining and it is hard to not notice his mega-watt smile and the sparkle in his eyes. With wheels already in motion for another album, be sure to keep your eye on this one!

Water Street

Water Street is a Pop/Americana  group from the northwestern hills of Blairstown, NJ.  Formed  in 2014,  the band began playing in an old warehouse on Water Street where vocalist/guitarist Dave Paulson lived with his family.  The band adopted the name Water Street as a nod to their roots and began playing out, starting at coffee houses and open  mics, later moving to stages at venues like The Bitter End, The Stone Pony and a main stage at MusikFest.

Water Street takes the  Americana standards  of acoustic guitar and  mandolin, but mixes them with electric guitar and a prominent  rhythm section  which  rolls  with a  hint of a funk  groove.

In 2016 the band released their first full length album Waiting for Martin, a 10 track album of original songs to rave reviews. Their follow-up EP Dear You  was released in 2017. The band's third album, All We Tried To Be,  debuted in March, 2022.

With members Dave Paulson (guitar/vocals), Connor Konecnik (drums), Joe Byrne (bass) and Mike Stark (electric guitar), Water Street continually delivers a unique and authentic musical experience for their  audience and are certainly a band on the rise.

"This is Americana music for our modern world, still full of the same depth and soul heard on classic recordings, but much more resonate with our modern lives and challenges." - Music Existence Magazine
